Dr. Valery Fomin — Institute of plant and animal ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAE UB RAS) Ural State Forest Engineering University 02.03.2011
Organization Name:Institute of plant and animal ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAE UB RAS) Ural State Forest Engineering University
Department/Unit:Joint (IPAE UB RAS & Ural State Forest Engineering University) GIS-technology Research Laboratory for Forest Sciences and Ecology
Short description of the organization/department/research team:Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology, Ural Branch of RAS (before 1964 - Institute of Biology, Ural Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR) was established in June 18, 1944. Today the Institute is the largest research institute of biological profile in the Urals region, one of the leaders of the fundamental works in the field of ecology and environmental protection in the Russian Federation. The general direction of scientific research is to study of patterns of organization, functioning, dynamics, evolution and sustainability of living systems at the level of populations, communities and ecosystems. Joint Research Laboratory of GIS-technologies in the field of forest sciences and ecology was established in 2002, the Ural State Forestry University (Order № 1A on January 8, 2002) and the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology, Ural Branch of RAS (Order № 12 dated February 12, 2002) to research and resolve practical problems in forest sciences and ecology using GIS-technologies and improvement training of foresters.

Organization Name:Institute of Global Climate and Ecology of Roshydromet and Russian Academy of Sciences (IGCE)
Department/Unit:
Short description of the organization/department/research team:Institute of global climate and ecology (IGCE) was founded in 1990. The main task of the Institute is to study climate changes, environment pollution and its environmental consequences. The research covers fundamental principles of these phenomena and processes and applied aspects of their monitoring and assessment in regional, continental and global scales.
Research activity of IGCE:
  • Climate changes, their consequences and its impact on ecosystems.
  • Study of changes in the concentration of greenhouse gases and their impact on climate.
  • Man-induced changes of atmosphere chemical composition, continental surface water and soil and environmental consequences. Tendencies and dynamics.
  • Man-induced changes of the World ocean (pollution, its environmental consequences, consequences of climate changes).
  • Radioactive pollution of the environment.
The Institute is a chief institution in a number of international projects and programs of the UN, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), UNESCO. RAS Academician Y.Izrael formally represents Russia in the Intergovernmental expert group on climate change and is a Deputy Chairman of the expert group.
