Prof. Zoya G. Mirzekhanova — Institute of Water and Ecology Problems, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (IWEP FEB RAS) 13.04.2011
Organization Name:Institute of Water and Ecology Problems, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (IWEP FEB RAS)
Department/Unit:Laboratory of the Regional Resource Use
Short description of the organization/department/research team:Founded in 1968 IWEP FEB RAS now in the leading environment research institute in the Russian Far East with staff over 124 researchers and engineers. 9 laboratories carry our research in hydrology, hydrogeology, hydroecology, biogeochemistry, ecological biotechnologies, ecology of soils, plants and animals, natural ecosystem microbiology, forest and wetland resources, optimization of natural resource use, urban development. Together with fundamental research in these field IWEP FEB RAS undertakes applied studies of natural and anthropogenic impacts on regional environment, ecological expertise and auditing of various projects. Several IWEP innovations won national and international exhibition medals and diplomas. Laboratory of the Regional Resource Use carries out complex assessment of territory development to work out optimal environment-friendly strategies of territory sustainable development, to select natural resource management priorities and landscapes and nature objects to be conserved due to their ecological stability functions, to set up regulations for human activity in areas to be protected.
Dr. Igor Manzhurov — Institute of Industrial Ecology Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IIE UB RAS) 13.04.2011
Organization Name:Institute of Industrial Ecology Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IIE UB RAS)
Department/Unit:Laboratory of territories sustainable development
Short description of the organization/department/research team:Institute of Industrial Ecology (IIE) of Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Science (UB of RAS) carry out fundamental scientific research in systemic environmental problems area. The directions of activities are following: (a) multiple-factor analysis and complex systems modeling with essential function of ecological factor, including analysis and modeling consequences of toxicochemical and radiation impacts on biological environment and population health, as well as heat-and-mass transfer processes in different environments; (b) territories sustainable development – systemic analysis of ecological, social and economical problems and evaluation of various path territory development consequences; (c) environmental safety and natural and anthropogenic risk analysis for population and environment. Institute implements a wide rang methodological and applied ecological investigations on regions, industrial zones, cities, municipal territories and separate enterprises level. The conception of complex interdisciplinary approach to environmentally adverse territories problems was elaborated here. Within the bounds of this conception methodology for complex multiple-factor analyzing medical-ecological and socio-economic problems of high anthropogenic loaded territories was offered. Scientific structural department of the IIE UB RAS consists of 6 laboratories and includes 42 scientific researchers.

Dr. Vera Pozolotina — Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAE UB RAS) 12.04.2011
Organization Name:Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAE UB RAS)
Department/Unit:Laboratory of population radiobiology
Short description of the organization/department/research team:IPAE UB RAS makes multidisciplinary biological studies on the regularities of functioning, evolution and stability of biological systems at population, community and ecosystem levels in natural and anthropogenically changed environments of the Urals and adjacent territories of the Northern Eurasia. The staff tackles problems of applied ecology: rational nature management; ecological regulation; bio-indication; ecotoxicology; radioecology; environmental impact assessment and ecological prediction. Scientific structural department of the IPAE UB RAS consists of 13 laboratories and includes 294 collaborators with 193 scientific researchers. “The Russian Journal of Ecology” is produced there. The research team Main directions of the fundamental investigations:
  • I. Radioactive contamination of the environment (Zones: the Earthen-Ural Radioactive Trace, the Southern Yakutia, the Techa River flood-land, the Chernobyl NPP Zone).
  • II. Radiobiological effects in the natural plant and animal populations in the different radioactive contaminated zones.
  • III. Experimental investigations of radiation-exposed some species of plants: genetic, ecological and physiological aspects. Comparison of long-term effects in the plant population from zones of radiation and chemical contamination.
