Short description of the organization/department/research team:The Faculty of Geography is the largest scientific and educational centre of geography in the world. There are 1200 students and 180 PhD students studying on the Faculty. The Faculty con-sists of 15 departments, 8 research laboratories and 4 field stations with total 860 employees. Present day directions of geographic research have been formed in the Faculty under the in-fluence of the contemporary trends. The fields of fundamental high priority studies in the period of 2006-2010 are as follows: Structure and Evolution of Environmental Systems, Impact on the Environment, Sustainable Management of Resources, Human Geography of Russia and Foreign Countries, Interaction between the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Lithosphere, Cartography, Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing, Geographical and Geoecological Education. Several national and international organizations, such as the Inter-university Aerospace Cen-tre, the MSU Intercollegiate Coordinating Council on Erosion, Channel and River-Mouth Processes, UNESCO-sponsored International Higher Hydrological Courses and the Council of Young Scientists operate at the Faculty.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:Dagestan State University is the educational, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Dagestan. The Faculty of Ecology and Geography provides professional education for graduate and postgraduate students specializing in ecology, geography and nature management.
Research activity of the Faculty of Ecology and Geography involves the study of the Caspian Sea ecology, marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as marine and coastal pollution monitoring, biodiversity observations, regional climate changes analysis and oceanographic research.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:Fields of expertise: (i) taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of marine bacterio-, phyto-, protozoo- (loricated ciliates) and mesozooplankton; (ii) invasion of alien species; (iii) long time series and inter-annual trends in the Black Sea plankton dynamics in terms of their abundance and diversity (as related to the global climate change); (iv) material (production, grazing and viral mortality, etc.) and energy (heat production measured by (photo)microcalorimetry) flows through marine plankton communities; (v) microbial and viral loops; (vi) microplankton and mesozooplankton viability assay; (vii) epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry of marine virioplankton, photoautotrophic and heterotrophic pico- and nanoplankton. IBSS has been using a Beckman Coulter Cytomics FC 500 flow cytometer since 2009. The method is applied for assessing water quality and other ecological and physiological variables, in particular: (i) measuring abundance, viability and physiological activity of heterotrophic and photoautotrophic microorganisms in the sea, which belong to pico- (0.2 – 2 µm in size) and nanoplankton (2 – 20 µm in size); (ii) enumerating virus-like particles in seawater; (iii) identifying cell sub-populations in fish sperm and blood and assessing their physiological status (cell kinetics, proliferation, viability; enzyme activity; mitochondrial membrane potential, cell cycle, apoptosis, etc.); (iv) measuring individual cell DNA and pigment contents in microalgal cultures; (v) studying prey recognition and feeding selectivity in zooplankton grazing on microalgal mixtures. A broad spectrum of other flow cytometry applications can be covered. Microcalorimetric equipment (4-channel BAM 2277, TA Instruments, USA) is available at IBSS for conducting any ecophysiological and toxicological studies which require direct measurements of heat (energy) fluxes through the experimental biological system.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:IBSS FEBRAS carry on the fundamental applied investigations on land and freshwater ecosystems of Russian Far East and adjacent countries of Asian Pacific region.
The main scientific branches are: investigation of biodiversity, ecology and evolution of flora and fauna, and soil cover of APR; development and creation scientific foundation and technologies of rationale use, protection and reproduction of biological resources in Far East.
Educational Ecological Center and Center of Freshwater Monitoring of IBSS develop public ecological monitoring in the region and create and realize different public ecological programs; CFM deals with freshwater monitoring, develop modern bioassessment approaches in regional context cooperating with scientists and experts of East and North East Asian (ENEA) countries; teach specialists and public experts modern technologies of environmental monitoring with accent on freshwater ecosystems.
