Short description of the organization/department/research team:IPAE UB RAS makes multidisciplinary biological studies on the regularities of functioning, evolution and stability of biological systems at population, community and ecosystem levels in natural and anthropogenically changed environments of the Urals and adjacent territories of the Northern Eurasia. The staff tackles problems of applied ecology: rational nature management; ecological regulation; bio-indication; ecotoxicology; radioecology; environmental impact assessment and ecological prediction. Scientific structural department of the IPAE UB RAS consists of 13 laboratories and includes 294 collaborators with 193 scientific researchers. “The Russian Journal of Ecology” is produced there. The research team is conducted a study of the metabolic homeostasis in natural populations of small mammals inhabiting the East-Ural radioactive trace. Results of research are aimed at identifying ways and strategies of physiological adaptation to anthropogenous habitat, which allows to predicting the remote effects of long technogenic influences on the organism and populations of mammals.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:Sate Water Cadastre Laboratory develops automated systems for collection, processing, storage and dissemination of hydrological information on river regime and snow cover in the mountains; conducts studies of climate-related changes in hydrological regime of rivers, including studies of frequency of occurrence of hazardous and catastrophic floods and extreme high and low water periods, that cause damage; creates specialized data bases for such studies. Regional studies are also conducted focusing on the following: impact of climate change, earthquakes and economic activities on the quality of surface waters in the mountains of Siberia (Altai); chemical pollution of water bodies on the urbanized territories in the central regions of Russia; assessment of natural-resources potential for sustainable development of mountain territories and plains.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ural Division The Institute was established in 1944. The scope of the activities of IPAE RAN includes theoretical, basic and applied research in the fields of ichthyology, terrestrial ecology, historical ecology and climate reconstruction, radioecology, zoology, botany, ecological expertise and nature conservation. Topics are: research on organization and long-term dynamics of the terrestrial plant and animal communities, nature conservation, zoological and botanical database, vegetation mapping, vegetation pattern analysis, long-term research and monitoring of natural and man transformed ecosystems, detection and analysis of biodiversity, dendrochronology and paleontology, cytogenetic investigations, experimental research in the field of ecophysiology. The Institute one of the main participants of National Biodiversity Monitoring Programm. The Institute is one of the biggest scientific organizations in the field of biology in the Urals region. It has a wide experience in international research cooperation and coordination. In IPAE is situated editorial board of Russian Journal of Ecology – leading ecological magazine in Russia.

Short description of the organization/department/research team:According to different rating evaluations Voronezh state university is in the first twenty classic universities of Russia. The collective of executers includes the best specialists in the field of genetics, cytogenetics, biotechnology, breeding in forest woody plants and ecology (2 doctor of science, 5 candidates of science, 3 young scientists, post-graduates). Among the executers there are the members of New York Academy of Sciences and World Directory of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeders. There was developed a method for production of qualitative micropreparations of woody plant cells and for their analysis. There were chosen experimental territories with contrast levels of pollution. There were worked out highly effective technologies of clonal micropropagation of highly productive and resistant to abiotic and biotic factors for some trees of hardwoods. On their basis experimental polyclonal plantations and collections of valuable genotypes in long-term in vitro cultivation (over 15 years) were established. On the theme of investigation the collective has published over 300 articles in the leading Russian and foreign journals, has received 4 patents and 4 inventor’s certificates. The project executers took part in the fulfillment of federal and regional programs on the announced themes both as executers and as supervisor of studies.
