International Scientific Conference “Nature and Biodiversity: Opportunities for Russian-German Collaboration” was held in Voronezh

On 21 – 22 March 2012 the VSU held international scientific conference “Nature and Biodiversity: Opportunities for Russian-German Collaboration” devoted to perspectives and opportunities of scientific and education cooperation between Russia and Germany in Environment.

The conference hosted more than 70 delegates including directors and leading scientists of research institutions and universities from Voronezh, Moscow, Tambov, Kursk, Rostov-upon-Don, Taganrog, Stavropol, and Birobidzhan.

The German delegation was represented by the Research Coordinator of Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut (vTI), Braunschweig; Director of the Institute of Forest Based Sector Economics, Hamburg; leading researchers of the Institute for Housing and Environment, Darmstadt, the Institute for Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Greifswald; and Institute for Forest Ecology and Forest Inventory, Eberswalde.

The core concept of the conference was matching of research interests of Russian and German scientists aiming at new partnerships in the field of environment.

The participants were welcomed by Dr. Nadezhda Storozhenko, the Head of the Directorate for ecology and management of natural resources of Voronezh region and Prof. Vasily Popov, Vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Informatisation of Voronezh State University.

The programme started with presentations given by delegates of organisations supporting joint research and education projects – Mr. Mikhail Rusakov, project manager of the German house of science and innovation in Moscow (DWIH), Mrs. Marina Bidder, Deputy Head, Moscow Branch Office of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Mrs. Julia Ilina, Project manager, German Research Foundation (DFG)-Office Russia/CIS, Moscow.

Mrs. Anna Bezlepkina, S&T Policy officer at the Delegation of the European Union to Russia, Moscow made a presentation of opportunities for scientific cooperation under the EU Seventh Framework Programme and priorities of the future “HORIZON 2020” programme.

These presentations were followed by discussion on tools for enhancing bilateral research cooperation between Germany and Russia, including presentations of Stefan Lange, Research Coordinator of Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut (vTI) and Alla Akulshina, Deputy Head of Regional Information Centre for Scientific&Technological Cooperation with the EU at Voronezh State University.

The scientific part of the conference was divided into three sessions: Biodiversity; Forest ecosystems and wood resources; and Urban environment.

The Biodiversity session composed of the following presentations:

Prof. Efim Frisman, Correspondent member of RAS, Director of Institute for Complex Analysis of Regional Problems of FEB RAS, spoke about modern state and scenario for development of natural ecosystems in regions with mixed floristic and faunistic zones in conditions of climate change;
Dr. Wolfgang Beck, senior scientist, Institute for Forest Ecology and Forest Inventory, Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute (vTI), told the audience about continental-wide growth drivers of forest-forming species (Quercus robur and Pinus sylvestris) in the European forest-steppe and nemoral forest ecosystems;
Senior scientist Dr. Walter Seidling from the same Institute informed about modelling plant performance against the background of anthropogenic impacts and possible climatic changes;
VSAFT activity in the field of preservation and recreation of biodiversity of forest ecosystems in European temperate zone was presented by Prof. Nikolay Kharchenko, Head of department of ecology, forest protection and forest hunting studies, Vice-rector for education of Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies;
Prof. Vladislav Kalaev, Deputy director for research, the B.M. Kozo-Polyansky Botanical garden, Voronezh State University, reported of conservation of gene pool and plant biodiversity of the world flora;
Prof. Vladimir Agafonov, Head of Botany and Mycology department, Voronezh State University, - “Flora of the Don basin as a unique body of plant cover of the European continent: anthropogenous transformation, biodiversity preservation in situ”;
Prof. Anna Grigorjevskaya, Department of Geo-ecology and environmental monitoring, Voronezh State University, - “Biodiversity of protected areas in Voronezh region”;
Estimation of natural base of the Don basin’s plant resources and monitoring with usage of quantitative criteria of species phytocoenotic activity was given by Prof. Olga Demina, Head of Laboratory of Biodiversity, Institute of Biology, Southern Federal University, Rostov-on-Don.

The ‘Forest ecosystems and wood resources’ session comprised the following presentations:

Prof. Matthias Dieter, Director of the Institute of Forest Based Sector Economics, Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute (vTI) and his colleague Mr. Hermann Englert gave a presentation “The Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting for Forests (IEEAF): a common base to compare sustainability between Russia and Germany?”;
Prof. Sergey Matveev, Head of the department of forestry, forest inventory and forest management, Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies, made comparative analysis of climate and conditions for forest Central Black Soil Region (Russia) and federal land Brandenburg (Germany);
Dr. Marina Mikheeva, from the Department of Geoecology and Environmental Monitoring, Voronezh State University, reported of assessment of the status and sustainability of trees in the urban environment;
Prof. Yury Arefiev, Department of ecology, forest protection and forest hunting studies, Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies, - “Genetic-ecological control of pathogenesis in forest ecosystems”;
Dr. Olga Mashkina, Department Of Genetics, Cytology and Bioengineering, Voronezh State University, informed about Biotechnology method usage for reproduction and preservation of forestry gene pool;
Dr. Igor Isakov, Forest Stands Breeding and Forest Amelioration Department, Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies, spoke about the studying of effect of inbreeding on growth of seed progeny in woody plants;
Dr. Anatoly Iroshnikhov, leading researcher of Federal State Unitary Enterprise Research Institute of Forest Genetics and Breeding, reported of Clone propagation of spontaneous hybrids and trees of larch with heterosis effect.

The Urban environment session included:

Presentation of Prof. Semion Kurolap, Head of the department of geoecology and monitoring of environment, Faculty of geography, geoecology and tourism, Voronezh State University, “Estimation of ecological consequences of global climatic changes and risk for health of the population of industrially developed cities of the Europe and the Central Russia”;
Dr. Peter Werner, Senior Researcher at Institute for Housing and Environment (IWU), presented “Biodiversity and urban environment”.
Prof. Sergey Gaponov, Head of the Department of Zoology and Parasitology, Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences, Voronezh State University, reported of modern urban environment and zoonotic diseases;
Dr. Paul Dremsek, Scientist of the Institute for Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI) devoted his presentation to Network „Rodent-borne pathogens“: Changing climate, rodent population dynamics and pathogen threats for humans.

Proactive work of the sessions was concluded by discussion and making up of topics of common interest as well as opportunities of further close cooperation.
